#FLASHBACK-EVENTS THAT ROCKED 2015...Mauricio Macri becomes new president of Argentina - November 22, 2015

The mayor of Buenos Aires city Mauricio Marci won the second-round runoff election in Argentina on November 22 to become the country’s next president. He ran his campaign under the slogan Cambiemos (“Let’s Change”) and his coalition of centrists and right-leaning parties got 51.4% of the vote. Marci defeated the governor of Buenos Aires province Daniel Scioli, who had been handpicked by outgoing president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Macri is widely expected to reverse some of Cristina’s more populist policies. Argentina’s economy is in a poor shape, and putting it back on track would be a priority for the new president. The left-leaning Cristina Fernandez and her late husband, who was president before her, have dominated the country’s politics, and Marci’s win may mark a sharp change in the economic and foreign policies of Argentina. With the country’s reserves down to under $26 billion, the new leader may have to take tough steps such as devaluing the currency and slashing subsidies.
