New Year's Eve 2015 live: Scottish celebration plans

Closer to home, in Stirling, Scotland, celebrations will centre around a Carnival of Light and Sound with an evening parade through the city centre, family entertainment in King’s Park and a fireworks display. Attacks by alleged Boko Haram militants killed over 50 people and injured 114 others in the Nigerian cities ofMaiduguriand Madagali. According to the residents, three female suicide bombers detonated explosives that led to the several deaths in the last 24 hours. Sources said that two of the suicide bombers detonated the explosives together at a market place.

Well-known bassist and legendary Motörhead frontman Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister died at his home. The 70 year old was detected with an ‘extremely aggressive form of cancer’. Lemmy was the sole constant member of the 1970s rock band Hawkwind and was popular worldwide for his full-throated yet gravelly tonal quality. He is survived by bandmates Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee.

On the eve of New Year, security has been beefed up around the world due to fears of terrorism. As per media reports, in the United States security has been tightened in high-profile places which include Times Square in New York and the Rose Bowl festivities near Los Angeles. Meanwhile, police in  Turkey  and Belgium said they have foiled terrorist plots that would target New Year celebrations. After several countries were warned of possible terrorist attacks, security has been beefed up in Vienna, Austria. The government of Shanghai,  China , said that no organized New Year celebration would be held on the Bund, which is a riverfront area popular among tourists. Nigeria however has been declared peaceful,but they have security on hand to make sure it stays that way.

A passenger ship by the name of Eastern Star sank during a storm, killing 434 people. The ship carrying mostly senior citizens was on a pleasure cruise on that part of the Yangtze river which winds through China’s Hubei province. Sources say that strong winds and heavy rainfall had led to the accident.

A Germany-bound jetliner dashed into the mountainside in the French Alps, killing 150 passengers. The dead include 16 high school students. As per the aviation officials, the Airbus 320 had a mysterious descent of 14, 000 feet after it had reached its cruising height of 38,000.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on February 26 to regulate broadband Internet service as a public utility, a major step in regulating high-speed net service into US households. The new rules were backed 3 to 2 along party lines, and aim to ensure that content does not get blocked and the Internet is not divided into fast connections for some and slow lanes for the rest. Commission chairman Tom Wheeler, a Democrat, said the FCC was using all “tools in our toolbox to protect innovators and consumers”. He said it was important to preserve the Internet’s ideals of “free expression and democratic principles”. Besides wired lines, mobile data for smartphones and tablets was placed under the new regulations. Consumer privacy protection norms and steps to bring Internet service to people in remote areas and with disabilities are also part of the new rules. Republicans hit out at the new norms, with Republican commissioner Ajit Pai saying that the net was “not broken” a...

The 11th Edition of the  Cricket World Cup  was held from February 14, 2015 to March 29, 2015. The tournament was jointly hosted by  Australia  and  New Zealand . Fourteen teams competed for the World Cup and played 49 matches in 14 venues. India, which had won the tournament in 2011, was the defending champions; however, they were trounced by Australia in the semi-finals. The finals were held between Australia and New Zealand, which had defeated South Africa in the semi-finals. In the finals Australia defeated New Zealand.
