#FLASHBACK-EVENTS THAT ROCKED 2015...President Morsi sentenced to 20 years in jail - April 21, 2015

On April 21, an Egyptian court sentenced Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters when he was president. The military deposed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests erupted against his Muslim Brotherhood-led government. Authorities then banned the Muslim Brotherhood and arrested thousands of party workers. Most of the other defendants were given similar 20-year jail terms. Morsi was charged with several crimes including colluding with foreign militants in a bid to free Islamists from prison during the 2011 upsurge against the then president Hosni Mubarak; espionage and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts in the country with foreign groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah; and endangering national security by leaking classified documents to Qatar. In May, Morsi and more than 100 others were sentenced to death after being convicted of colluding with foreign Islamist militants and organising a mass prison break. They were also found guilty of murder, kidnapping and damaging prison buildings. In June, a court in Egypt upheld the death sentence against Morsi and 98 other defendants. President Sisi has carried out a widespread crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood amid allegations that trials against the Islamist movement are politically motivated.
