The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup was held in Canada from June 6 to July 5. The United States team defeated Japan in the finals to lift the trophy. This was the seventh FIFA Women's World Cup. Canada hosted the event for the first time, and matches were played in six cities across five time zones. The 2015 World Cup saw 24 teams participating, up from the 16 in 2011. Canada got a direct entry as it was the host side. Eight teams made their World Cup debut. All previous World Cup finalists qualified for the tournament. The tournament saw goal-line technology being used for the first time via the Hawk-Eye system. The number two-ranked US team beat top-ranked Germany 2-0 in the semi finals, while Japan beat England 2-1 to advance to the final. The US beat Japan 5-2 in the finals, winning its first Women's World Cup title since 1999.
